about

“Runaway” follows the mother, as she breaks away from another unhealthy relationship, this time with a cult leader. Back on the run, she shares a hard-won, slightly cynical take on creation (and life expectancy): “I’m alright with not knowing / But free to pretend”), before the repeated, weary resignation of the declarative: “I’m a runaway.”

lyrics

Though I tried and got real close, he wouldn’t let me in
I burned in my heart for so long, that it’s a sin
Then my eyes were laid open, and out went the flame
I ran through the darkness—a road with no name

I’m a runaway
I’m a runaway
I’m a runaway
I’m a runaway

Though I’m tired, my feet won’t stop, they won’t let me rest
I burn to the beat of my heart and each breath
Don’t know how far I’m going, our road has no end
I’m alright with not knowing, but free to pretend

I’m a runaway
I’m a runaway
I’m a runaway
I’m a runaway
